The MLB regular comes to a close on Sunday. Several teams have already clinched their spot in the postseason, many have been eliminated, and a few remain to fight for the last couple of wildcard spots.
The MLB season is very long already, but there have been many years where teams have to play the 163rd game to get into postseason play.
The MLB has now taken that out of the equation, instead using a tie-breaker system. For a full breakdown of all MLB playoff tie-breakers and scenarios, check out our MLB playoff tie-breakers, explained: Postseason clinching scenarios for AL, NL teams in 2023 article.
MLB teams to already clinch a playoff spot
Here are the teams to have clinched their spot in postseason play already.
- Baltimore Orioles: Clinched AL East and AL’s best record
- Tampa Bay Rays: Clinched a wildcard spot
- Minnesota Twins: Clinched AL Central
- Atlanta Braves Clinched NL East and NL’s best record and will clinch MLB’s best record with one more win or an Orioles loss.
- Philadelphia Phillies: Clinched a wildcard spot
- Milwaukee Brewers: Clinched NL Central
- Los Angeles Dodgers: Clinch NL West
Odds to make the MLB playoffs
Here are the current MLB odds from the best sportsbooks across the United States for each MLB team to make the playoffs.
Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays are in control of their own destiny as they sit in the 2nd wild card spot in the AL as of Friday morning. It is simple for the Blue Jays: if they win one more game, they will at least get a chance for tie-breakers to get in, and if they win two, they are guaranteed to get in.
There is also the possibility that even if the Jays lose three in a row, they could still make the playoffs.
The Ranger can clinch a share of the AL West with one more win and can clinch it outright with two more wins. The Rangers really need to avoid getting swept by the Mariners, and they will be in.
To give themselves a shot, Seattle needs to sweep the Rangers and hope the Astros and Blue Jays lose some games. Even with a sweep, the Mariners may have to depend on tie-breakers to get in.
For a full breakdown of all their possibilities, read our MLB playoff-clinching scenarios for Cubs, Marlins, Astros, Mariners & more entering the final weekend page.
The Marlins control their own destiny; if they win out, they are in, but they could still get it in multiple other scenarios.
Like the Marlins, win enough, and the Cubs are in; lose a few, and you could still find your way in.
The Reds need to win out or win at least 2 of 3 to have a chance, but they also need some help with teams in front of them losing some games.
The Diamondbacks need to win one more to get to tie-breaker scenarios, and two more wins clinch their playoff spot.
San Diego Padres
Need a lot of help and need to win out. Their playoff chances likely end on Friday night, even if they win.
