Alabama-LSU trash delay, explained: Kirk Herbstreit blasts Tigers fans who threw bottles on field
It has been a theme in College Football this year that upset fans cause on-field delays by throwing trash onto the field, and it happened again on Saturday night.
As Alabama and LSU faced off in a big SEC matchup, the Crimson Tide found themselves in control of the game in the third quarter. However, the Tigers appeared to stop Alabama’s offense on a drive in an attempt to get the ball back down 15, but LSU was called for a penalty that allowed the drive to continue.
That resulted in LSU fans throwing trash onto the field, which caused a delay in the game. The Sporting News examines what happened in Baton Rouge.

Alabama-LSU on-field trash delay, explained
Alabama was up 21-6 and facing a 3rd-and-8 in their own territory when LSU executed a crucial sack to force a punt. However, LSU was called for a facemask on Jalen Milroe, allowing the drive to continue as the Crimson Tide would go on to score another touchdown.
However, LSU fans disagreed, resorting to throwing trash on the field to cause an on-field delay, which upset Kirk Herbstreit.
“Why has that had to become a thing this year?” Herbstreti said. “Some idiots do this at Texas, and all of the sudden you see it popping up in college football. Just, what are you doing? This is just stupid. It is embarrassing to LSU, it is embarrassing to college football and just around the country. Enough is enough.”

Herbstreit is referencing Texas’ loss to Georgia earlier this year, in which Longhorns fans threw trash on the field after an incorrectly-called pass interference. Due to that delay, the officials had time to discuss the penalty and ended up picking up the flag, allowing a Texas interception to stand.
This also followed earlier on Saturday, when Texas Tech fans threw trash on the field in a 41-27 loss to Colorado. It appears that more and more fanbases are becoming comfortable with this kind of behavior.
