Bayern Munich vs Man United live score, highlights, result, updates as Tel makes it 4-2

Andre Onana’s horrible error sparked a first-half collapse from Manchester United before Harry Kane struck from the penalty spot to make it 3-1 to Bayern Munich.

Christian Eriksen almost gave the struggling Premier League side a fourth-minute lead and they were the better side until Onana inexplicably let Leroy Sane’s drive from outside the area escape his grasp.

Serge Gnabry made it two goals in four minutes for the Bundesliga champions after the half-hour, applying a cool finish after a devastating solo run from Jamal Musiala that scattered the right-hand side of the United defence.

Rasmus Hojlund reduced the arrears with his first United goal early in the second half but a desperately harsh VAR review penalised Eriksen for handball and Kane finished emphatically from the penalty spot.

Bayern Munich vs Man United live updates, highlights

90th minute+2: GOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Mathys Tel!!!!!!

The 18-year old clatters his third goal of the season into the roof of the net and that is game over.

90th minute+1Muller hits the post! Bayern’s substitutes combine as Tel fires in a low cross and Muller slides it against the post

90th minute: Garnacho skips past Laimer to win a free-kick. Dangerous position on the left. Now then… Upamecano heads away. There will be four additional minutes.

88th minute: GOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Casemiro!!!!!!

A sting in the tail? Bayern had been meandering towards the final whistle but Rashford finds Casemiro, whose cute run and finish makes it 3-2! Surely they can’t, can they?

81st minute: Garnacho and Martial replace Pellistri and Hojlund. The Danish striker’s goal is the positive for Ten Hag to cling onto here.

79th minute: Kane and Sane turn on the style, with the striker playing a backheel one-two with his winger. McTominay slides in hilariously and misses everything. Coman’s shot is saved.

78th minute: He almost does just that! Choupo-Moting whips a shot from just inside the box and that’s a very good save from Onana high to his right.

75th minute: Musiala makes way to a standing ovation. He’s been absolutely majestic. Choupo-Moting is on to try and deepen United’s misery.

69th minute: McTominay on for Eriksen. You have to hope he’s brought his Scotland Euro 2024 qualification form.

64th minute: Onana saves from Sane this time. Probably a harder save than the first goal. Not that that’s too difficult. This isn’t one-way traffic just yet, but there’s clearly a heavily preferred route.

63rd minute: Coman on for Gnabry. I’m sure the United defence are delighted.

62nd minute: Onana beats away a Kane strike at his near post. Martinez then shoves the England striker in the back, Goretzka doesn’t like it and both players get yellow cards.

60th minute: Rashford has Laimer on toast again. Reguilon flashes a shot across the face. United are not going to die wondering, it seems.

55th minute: Musiala tearing forward now, United have to be careful this doesn’t get ugly. The pass to Sane is beautifully weighted and a side-footed finish comes back off the base of the post. Ooof!

53rd minuteGOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Harry Kane (pen)!!!

Onana guesses correctly but Kane’s shot is drilled with precision into the bottom left corner. That could very well be game over.

53rd minutePenalty to Bayern! It’s nonsense, no one wants that to be a penalty. Harry Kane won’t complaint though as he has the chance to make it 3-1. Onana redemption arc?

52nd minute: Referee Glenn Nyberg is checking the monitor for a handball claim against Christian Eriksen. In truth the midfielder was too close to Dayot Upamecano’s header to really do much about that. But this is the Champions League, sooooo….

50th minute: Ohh, stead on. United are shown they can’t get too excited as Bayern scythe forward on the break and Dalot makes a fine challenge to deflect Musiala’s shot just wide.

49th minuteGOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Rasmus Hojlund!!!!!

Game on! Hojlund has his first goal for United and Ten Hag’s side are back into this one. Rashford tees up his new attacking partner, who swivels to his the shot left-footed. A deflection off Kim leaves Ulreich with no chance.

48th minute: Casemiro pings a lovely ball over the top of the Bayern defence. Fernandes is alive to the possibilities but Kim sticks with him and bravely puts his head in the way to snuff out the chance.

46th minute: We’re back underway. United were out on the pitch for almost five minutes waiting for Bayern to re-emerge. Ten Hag with one of those “Right, now you lot get out of my sight!” team talks.

Halftime: As was the case in their 3-1 weekend defeat to Brighton, United played well for the first 20 minutes here. Then Andre Onana inexplicably let Leroy Sane’s shot through his grasp, Jamal Musiala produced a moment of magical inspiration to set up Serge Gnabry and here we are.

45th minuteAlmost 3-0 to Bayern. Sane cuts inside and whips a savage shot with his left foot that curls and dips just past the right-hand post. Onana was rooted to the spot.

44th minute: Reguilon tries another raid down the Bayern right but the final ball can’t match his endeavour.

37th minute: United have responded quite well to the roof caving in. Dalot lifts a cross in from the right and Hojlund should probably do a bit better with his header.

34th minuteChance for United! Casemiro slots a dreamy ball into the channel for the all-action Reguilon. His low ball across the face of goal is begging to be converted. Maybe he overhit it a touch but neither of Hojlund or Pellistri bought a ticket.

32rd minuteGOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Serge Gnabry!!!!!!

Bayern go “bang, bang” as Musiala tears away from Dalot down the left. It’s a wonderful dribble and he rounds it off by teeing up Gnabry for a simple finish, one made simpler by Martinez and Reguilon both marking Kane. Mountain to climb now for United.

28th minuteGOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Leroy Sane!!!!!!

Oh my word, Andre Onana what have you done? A probing spell of possession ends up at the feet of Sane, who links up with Kane. It’s all very sharp work from Bayern and the winger finds room on the edge of the box to collect the return pass and shoot left-footed. Sane catches it well as he tends to, but it’s not in the corner and needs Onana to make a complete hash of his dive and flap the ball into his net. Woeful goalkeeping.

26th minute: United’s early intensity just dropping a fraction and here’s Leroy Sane, storming across the field from his own half. Reguilon follows him all the way and gets a superb slide tackle in. Bayern come again, with Laimer flashing a ball across goal.

23rd minute: Gnarby looks like he might be in down the left channel but Martinez slams the door.

21st minute: Kane has cut an isolated figure so far but he comes deep and is alive to the possibilities when Hojlund turns over the ball. The England captain slips a pass through to Musiala that’s a touch overhit, allowing Lindelof to slide in and turn the shot behind. United are untroubled by the two corners that follow.

19th minute: Reguilon coughs up possession to Goretzka. The Bayern midfielder’s attempt to find Gnabry is similarly disappointing and Dalot reads the pass with ease.

18th minute: Rashford turns Laimer inside out before drilling a low cross into Ulreich’s midriff. Ominous signs for Bayern though because Laimer is a career midfielder and Rashford is making him look like one as he grapples with right-back duties.

16th minute: Kane heads Fernandes’ delivery over. The short corner ends up back with Onana, which can’t have been the plan.

15th minute: Reguilon has made a lively start to this one. He threatens to get away from Upamecano and the Bayern defender bundles him over to give United a handy free-kick on the left.

12th minute: Reguilon is flat on his back after colliding with Sane. If we’re being honest, the Germany winger could probably have tried to avoid such heavy contact. There’s a whiff of a cheap shot about that. The former Real Madrid full-back is ready to continue. Then he fouls Sane to balance the footballing universe or something like that.

9th minute: United playing well on the front foot and looking dangerous here. Reguilon gets forward on the overlap to win a corner. Strangled shouts for handball against Upameano but it isn’t. Rashford and Eriksen work it short and the latter’s cross is thumped clear by Ulreich.

4th minuteUnited should be in front! Eriksen picks out Pellistri with a devilish ball into the six-yard box. Davies makes an unbelievable last-ditch challenge. How he’s neither given a penalty away or but the ball into his own net there I’m not really sure Eriksen is onto the loose ball. The angle is tight but he should do better than hammering a shot straight at Ulreich.

3rd minute: Sane darts into the space between Reguilon and Martinez, of which there’s far too much. The former Manchester City winger wins a corner but United see it off.

1st minute: Bayern get us underway. They’re wearing white shirts with red sleeves because they’re unique among elite European clubs in not being able to properly decide what their home kit is. United are wearing their peculiar Fluminense-light away kit.

2 mins to KO: The teams are out, the famous anthem has been played and we will be underway after a moment’s silence to pay tribute to the victims of the recent tragedies in Morocco and Libya.

10 mins to KO: Talking of late Champions League drama, Copenhagen were leading 2-0 in the other Group A game in Istanbul. Galatasaray struck in the 86th and 88th minute to earn a share of the spoils.

25 mins to KO: Of course, next year is the 25th anniversary of the most famous meeting between these two sides. Ten Hag’s predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer struck in injury time at Camp Nou to give Alex Ferguson’s United a 2-1 win over Bayern in the 1999 Champions League final and an unprecedented treble for an English club. At least it was. Manchester City matched their neighbours’ feat by winning a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble. United are not about to get back to that level overnight but a positive result in Munich would be a huge step in the right direction.

45 mins to KO: Goretzka and Kimmich starting together as Bayern’s central midfield pairing is, in itself, not especially notable. The Germany duo have started all four Bundesliga games together so far this season. However, alongside signing a new striker, Thomas Tuchel made a new defensive midfield specialist his priority over the summer. Unlike in the case of the Kane signing, Bayern were unable to satisfy their coach’s demands. It suggested he was not entirely convinced over the merits of the Goretzka-Kimmich axis in the biggest games. They get a chance to prove their boss wrong tonight.

1 hr 5 mins to KO: And here’s the Bayern team. Kane, Sane, Gnabry and Musiala the front four. Woof!

1 hr 10 mins to KO: The teams are in and there’s a start for Facundo Pellistri in the United XI. It looks like the Uruguay international will line up on the right wing. Some place to make your Champions League debut and second senior start for the club!

1 hr 20 mins to KO: Confirmed team news will be with us imminently. Harry Kane is poised to lead the line for Bayern after an impressive start to life in Bavaria. But could have have been lining up for the other team tonight? The England captain addressed this at the pre-match news conference.

Obviously, over the summer I know there were some talks between a few clubs in the background, but Bayern were a team I was really interested and excited by. There were not too many other discussions once they came in. It was between them and Tottenham to talk and then the deal got done. My focus is on here. Manchester United are a great club, a really big club as well. I just decided to come here and am really happy I have.

1 hr 40 mins to KO: United’s start to the season has sounded a few familiar alarm bells. Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho also had very encouraging first seasons in charge at Old Trafford before the wheels started wobbling once again. But Erik ten Hag is refusing to panic ahead of tonight’s daunting assignment at the Allianz Arena.

No, we don’t feel we need [a reset]. We are in a process. In parts of the game we play well. In parts of the game we play below our levels. We need to be consistent for 90-plus minutes.

Ten Hag’s injury list continues to grow with defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka the latest player to be ruled out of this game. Alongside a host of injuries, Jadon Sancho is not currently involved with the United first team, with Antony taking a leave of absence.
