Ben Shelton vs. Jannik Sinner live tennis score, results, highlights from 2025 Wimbledon men’s quarterfinals
WIMBLEDON, LONDON — Ben Shelton faces his toughest test yet when he meets world No.1 Jannik Sinner for a spot in the Wimbledon semifinals.
The American will need to record his first top-10 win of the year against the Italian if he’s to deny Sinner a second semifinal appearance at SW19, having last reached that stage two years ago.
Much of the outcome of this match could depend on Sinner’s elbow injury. He had an MRI scan yesterday and only underwent a light practice session on hard courts.
Sinner was two sets down in his fourth-round match before opponent Grigor Dimitrov had to retire, and Shelton will be hoping that’s his get-out-of-jail-free card already used up this tournament.
Shelton has already seen off one Italian in Lorenzo Sonego in his last match but is up against the No.1 seed, who has beaten him five times and lost just once when the two have previously met.

Ben Shelton* 6-7 (2-7), 1-1 Jannik Sinner
In a stat no American will want to read… Sinner is 68-9 in majors after winning the first set in his career. Shelton still looks full of energy and desire on the court though with two aces seeing him hold to 30.
Ben Shelton 6-7 (2-7), 0-1 Jannik Sinner*
A bit like Taylor Fritz yesterday during the third set, Shelton’s forehand seems to have deserted him. He’s overhitting everything right now. A couple of tentative shots from Sinner allows Shelton to get two break points though. Sinner saves both, much to his opponent’s frustration. That would have been the perfect response to the tie-break. An ace and another big serve turn it around for the Italian.

Ben Shelton 6-7 (2-7) Jannik Sinner – Sinner wins first set!
Another forehand effort from Shelton goes agonisingly beyond the baseline, 2-5. It’s the same again at the next point and Sinner’s now on the brink of the first set. He connects with a simple shot all wrong and it sails high and long. Sinner held his nerve in the tie-break, proving exactly why he’s world No.1
Ben Shelton 6-6 (2-4) Jannik Sinner
Another shot right into the corner from Sinner prompts Shelton’s sliced return to find the net, 2-2. The 10th seed then double faults to fall behind for the first time in the tie-break. Shelton then overhits a forehand, 2-4.
Ben Shelton 6-6 (2-1) Jannik Sinner
Sinner’s return off Shelton’s serve is long, 1-0. Brilliant play from the American as he lures Sinner in with a drop shot, which he makes, but Shelton is equally as quick to return from a tight angle, 2-0. Sinner gets one back with a sweet forehand.
Ben Shelton 6-6 Jannik Sinner*
Little to separate the pair so this is going to be a fascinating tie-break. Sinner sees out the game with a forehand into space.
Ben Shelton* 6-5 Jannik Sinner
Shelton falls behind but then draws on his big serve to bail him out of trouble to get to 30-15. Sinner gets level with a backhand volley at the net with Shelton still at his baseline. A 143mph ace and another serve out wide comes to his rescue.
Ben Shelton 5-5 Jannik Sinner*
A cushioned volley at the net leaves Shelton no chance, 30-0. Shelton then goes aggressive with a forehand shot but it’s overhit. Another hold to love is brought up with Sinner hitting one down the line. Might as well just go to the tie-break now…
Ben Shelton* 5-4 Jannik Sinner
Shelton gets to 30-0 without breaking a sweat but then double faults. Not many hit their second serve at 143mph but that’s why he’s great to watch! Another double fault prompts a few concerns though, 40-30. He takes it easier on the last point and Sinner makes the mistake.
Ben Shelton 4-4 Jannik Sinner*
Sinner gets to 30-0 with a sweet forehand into space and an overhit return by Shelton. Another ace brings him to within one point of the game. Shelton returns the last second serve but it can’t stay inside the court.
Ben Shelton* 4-3 Jannik Sinner
How long will Sinner’s elbow hold up against these 140mph serves? It’s relentless. At 15-15, a long rally sees Shelton hit a lovely tweener but Sinner has great reactions to cushion the volley for the point, 15-30. The longest rally of the match then ends with Sinner coming to the net which prompts Shelton to try the lob but it’s way beyond the baseline, 30-30. An overhead smash from Shelton is too hot to handle for Sinner, 40-30. The world No.1 then hits a backhand winner down the line to get to deuce. Shelton clings on to hold and the fans are loving the American’s early efforts!
Ben Shelton 3-3 Jannik Sinner*
Anything Shelton can do, Sinner can do too as he also fires a huge couple of serves and an ace on route to 40-0. The last point sees the American lure his opponent to the net with an awkward slice but Sinner just about scoops it over the net to hold to love.
Ben Shelton* 3-2 Jannik Sinner
A double fault for Shelton sees him fall 15-30 behind. He follows that up with a 139mph ace though! The next is 140mph and Sinner returns it but it goes high and out. Another ace seals the game. That’ll be a big part of his game plan today for sure.
Ben Shelton 2-2 Jannik Sinner*
Sinner gets to 30-0 comfortably. Another big serve sees Shelton fail to return it, 40-0. Shelton claws a point back as Sinner’s forehand effort goes long. Shelton then drills an aggressive forehand just outside the tramlines.
Ben Shelton* 2-1 Jannik Sinner
At 15-15, Sinner slips and has to brace himself with an outstretched arm. This time, thankfully, there’s no lasting damage to his (other) elbow. He’s inches from nailing a backhand passing shot but just misses the line, so Shelton is able to serve out the game.
Ben Shelton 1-1 Jannik Sinner*
Sinner’s elbow looks okay as he wins a baseline exchange thanks to some powerful backhands. The serve is also on point: Shelton can’t do much against it as the top seed holds to love.
Ben Shelton* 1-0 Jannik Sinner
Shelton lands a 116mph second serve right on the service line, and Sinner somehow returns it with interest. He pumps a fist as he takes a 30-15 lead. However, Shelton’s awesome power on the serve gets him out of trouble.
3:23 p.m. BST: At 22 years of age, Shelton has become the youngest American man to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon since a 21-year-old Roddick achieved the feat in 2004.
“He had nuke, bigger serve than me. He could run all day,” Shelton said of Roddick. “He was a grinder, just a physical beast. Someone that I’ve looked up for inspiration. Massive forehand, great footwork.
“Someone who’s been there along the way, sending some messages, giving some advice. Not always directly, but my dad or through Dean Goldfine, who was coaching me when I first came on tour. It’s kind of just been a great resource as another American who did a lot of the things that I’d like to do in this sport and did them at a really young age.
“Seems like everything that I’ve done, it’s the first to be done since him. He’s got me beat pretty much in every category.
“No, it’s pretty cool to be mentioned in the same sentence as him. Yeah, definitely look up to him and think very highly of him.”
3 p.m. BST: Iga Świątek has just beaten Liudmila Samsonova on No.1 Court meaning there won’t be any delay to Shelton and Sinner’s match. They’ll be making their way out soon.

2 p.m. BST: The big talking point of today’s match is going to be on Sinner’s elbow injury. Let’s bring you up to date.
The Australian Open and US Open champion fell awkwardly in the opening set of the match against Dimitrov and following the walkover win on Monday, the Italian had an MRI scan on his elbow.
He didn’t practice on grass yesterday but instead did a light session on hard courts. Ahead of his match today, he was spotted practicing on grass with a sleeve on his right arm.
“No news on the MRI just yet,” said Sinner’s coach Darren Cahill on ESPN last night. “He had it earlier today and he can’t take a day off, so he wanted to touch the ball. So Simone and myself just fed him a few balls out of the basket.
“It’s not a bad thing sometimes (to practise on hard court). The more you play on grass with the uneven bounces, the more your timing goes off. (Andre) Agassi used to do it all the time… We’ve done that for a couple of years, so it wasn’t out of the ordinary.”
