Biggest wins in Premier League history: Highest-scoring games, heaviest defeats as Newcastle destroy Sheffield United

Newcastle United have developed a recent habit of putting Premier League biggest-win records under threat.

Against Sheffield United, it looked like they might become the first team in the competition to hit double figures in a single game. Perhaps it would, had they not decided to take things easier in the closing stages of their 8-0 victory.

As alarmingly one-sided as the contest was, the fact Newcastle won the game was not such a surprise. It was far more unexpected in April 2023, when Tottenham visited Tyneside in what was supposed to be a top-four clash. After 20 minutes, it looked far from it.

Newcastle jumped out to a 5-0 lead after just 21 minutes, leading many to wonder whether the Magpies would come close to the all-time record for most lopsided Premier League victory.

Although the final result, and the method used to attain it, were historical in their own respect, matching the all-time record was not in the cards for the Magpies as the result finished 6-1, not even cracking the list of games with most goals.

Earlier in the 2022/23 season Liverpool crushed Bournemouth 9-0 to match the biggest win in Premier League history, matching the record margin of victory set by Manchester United (twice) and Leicester City.

Newcastle’s next go at the record was on September 24, 2023. They put a hapless Sheffield United to the sword at Bramall Lane, going 7-0 up with a further 17 minutes still to play. It left many wondering whether the record for the most one-sided wins in Premier League history could be under threat.

What is the biggest win in Premier League history?

The record for the biggest win in Premier League history is shared by LiverpoolManchester United, and Leicester City, who have all won a match in the competition by a scoreline of 9-0. United have done it twice.

The Red Devils achieved that feat first when they thrashed Ipswich Town back in March 1995. It would be 14 years before that scoreline was matched, when Leicester produced a remarkable performance to defeat Southampton 9-0 away in October 2019. Southampton fans could scarcely believe it when, 16 months later, they lost by the same scoreline to United at Old Trafford.

In August 2022, Liverpool beat Bournemouth 9-0 at Anfield in a match that cost Cherries manager Scott Parker his job.

Biggest wins in Premier League history by margin of victory

Here are the 23 matches that have featured the widest margin of victory in the Premier League since 1992/93.

It’s notable that Manchester United have won 9-0 on two separate occasions, 26 years apart. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have an 8-0 victory (2019) and 7-0 triumph (2021). Liverpool defeated United 7-0 in March 2023 in what was a truly shocking result. Newcastle’s 8-0 win at Sheffield United was the second-biggest away win in Premier League history.
