Blue Jays reportedly interested in $120 million Gold Glover

Coming off back-to-back playoff appearances, the Toronto Blue Jays fell well off the pace in the American League East last season, as the team’s 74-88 record was good for dead last — 20 games behind the division-winning New York Yankees.

“Canada’s Team” needs a talent injection to make 2024 a distant memory and has often been mentioned as a possible landing spot for the premier free-agent bat available this winter, Yankees outfielder Juan Soto.

While Bob Nightengale reports that Toronto remains one of “only four teams that are seriously in play” to sign Soto, it may take a contract along the lines of Shohei Ohtani’s Major League Baseball-record deal to bring him north of the border.

However, Mike Axisa of CBS Sports reports that the team is also interested in a number of other top free agents, including Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros.

Bregman is represented by agent Scott Boras, who has a long history of getting maximum payouts for his clients. While Spotrac’s calculated market value for Bregman points to a four-year contract of nearly $120 million, Boras’ representation hints that any deal that the nine-year Major League Baseball veteran inks could be higher than that.

The 30-year-old has played his entire career with Houston, the team that drafted him with the second overall pick in the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft. His previous five-year, $100 million contract expired with the final out of the 2024 season.

Bregman would fill one of Toronto’s most glaring projected deficiencies by taking over third base, but signing him rather than Soto — who likely will be signing a deal well over $500 million — could leave the Blue Jays with financial reserves to retain superstars Vladimir Guerrero and/or Bo Bichette, both of whom hit free agency next winter.

Nightengale has previously reported that Bregman is “amenable” to playing second base, which could allow Toronto to possibly also pursue Milwaukee Brewers free agent shortstop/third baseman Willy Adames, who MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand notes would also be a great fit for the only big-league ballclub playing north of the border.
