Fantasy Football Lineup Advice Week 3: Ace your start-or-sit decisions with RotoBaller’s “Who to Start?” tool

A win in Week 3 will have some teams in your league already looking ahead to the fantasy football playoffs. A loss for others will have them looking ahead to 2024. Fortunately, the experts at RotoBaller are here to help by giving Sporting News Fantasy readers free access to their exclusive “Who to Start?” advice tool to help with your Week 3 fantasy lineup decisions.

How does the “Who to Start?” tool work? Simple: Choose up to four players to compare below, pick your league settings in the upper right corner (PPR, half-PPR, standard), and push “Who to Start?” It’s that easy. From there, you’ll get a lineup recommendation based on RotoBaller’s award-winning rankings and projections.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about both individual players and matchups, so Week 3 can be a tricky one. We’re still being overly influenced by random touchdowns or potentially one big play, so be smart, follow the touches/targets, and rely on your process instead of overreacting to results.

As always, RotoBaller factored in usage, matchups, and talent into its Week 3 rankings, and it’s reflected in its “Who to Start?” tool. Check out an example from each offensive position.

Advice below is based on full-point PPR leagues

Start or Sit?: Week 3 fantasy QB lineup advice from RotoBaller

Russell Wilson (@ MIA) vs. Dak Prescott (@ ARI) vs. Jared Goff (vs. ATL) vs. Justin Fields (vs. KC)

Even though he’s disappointed a bit and Kansas City’s defense has looked good, Fields is still RotoBaller’s top choice among these four QBs. He sits two spots ahead of Goff and three spots ahead of Prescott, who both seem to have better matchups. Wilson brings up the rear despite a breakout Week 2 and a potential shootout with Miami, but consistency is still a major worry with him. Fields should do enough with his legs, especially in garbage time, to put up a QB1-worthy day.

Start or Sit?: Week 3 fantasy RB lineup advice from RotoBaller

Gus Edwards (vs. IND) vs. Alexander Mattison (vs. LAC) vs. Rachaad White (vs. PHI) vs. Dameon Pierce (vs. JAX)

White has arguably the toughest matchup, but RotoBaller still likes him the most out of this group. White should get ample opportunities in the receiving game, which keeps him one spot ahead of the disappointing Mattison. Pierce has also disappointed this year, and with a tough matchup that could see Houston passing more, he’s in a distant third. Edwards, still in a timeshare with Justice Hill (and Lamar Jackson), brings up the rear in this group, though he has more appeal in standard leagues. Ultimately, this is a pretty similar group of backs, but White’s pass-catching prowess gets him the nod in full-point PPR leagues.

WEEK 3 PPR RANKINGS:
QBs | RBs | WRs | TEs | D/STs | Kickers

Start or Sit?: Week 3 fantasy WR lineup advice from RotoBaller

Jahan Dotson (vs. BUF) vs. Christian Kirk (vs. HOU) vs. Nico Collins (@ JAX) vs. Michael Thomas (@ GB)

Collins has the least name value on this list, but he’s easily the highest ranked among this quartet. The targets speak for themselves, and the Texans should be throwing a lot in garbage time this week. Kirk, Dotson, and Thomas are bunched closely about eight spots back. Thomas has looked better than expected while Kirk and Dotson have largely disappointed, but they’re all borderline WR3s in RotoBaller’s rankings while Collins sits as more of a WR2.

WEEK 3 STANDARD RANKINGS:
QBs | RBs | WRs | TEs | D/STs | Kickers

Start or Sit?: Week 3 fantasy TE lineup advice from RotoBaller

Pat Freiermuth (@ LV) vs. Kyle Pitts (@ DET) vs. Jake Ferguson (@ ARI) vs. Hayden Hurst (@ SEA)

Ferguson and Hurst have both been better than Freiermuth and Pitts this year, but the two bigger-name TEs are still higher in RotoBaller’s rankings. Freiermuth gets the nod by two spots over Pitts, who’s four spots ahead of Ferguson. The matchups look good for both Freiermuth and Pitts, but this group is pretty much all “TD-or-bust” right now, so flip a coin and hope for the best.
