Greg Sankey, SEC blasted as Georgia Tech dominates UGA in first half of Week 14 matchup
As Georgia laid a goose egg against Georgia Tech in the first half Between the Hedges on November 29, several analysts took to Twitter to criticize SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and everyone else who believes the “It Just Means More” conference is entitled to more College Football Playoff spots regardless of record.
“Georgia may win an SEC title but can’t physically dominate a mid-pack ACC team. Greg Sankey should probably keep his mouth shut this week,” USA Today’s Dan Wolken wrote.
“It’s OK if there isn’t an elite team or teams in the SEC this year. But it’s time for people to stop arguing that there should be 4 (or 5!) SEC teams in the 12-team CFP just because of the league’s historical dominance. Results THIS YEAR matter,” NBC Sports’ Nicole Auerbach tweeted.
“If Georgia loses this game — or even if it doesn’t — we need to stop saying the SEC is just better than everyone else. There is no gifting them extra spots because it is the SEC. That’s not what the results say,” On3’s Ari Wasserman said.
UGA’s offensive woes were notable against the Yellowjackets in the 17-0 half of football. The Dawgs’ RB room finished with 33 rushing yards and only one player with more than three yards per carry. Carson Beck wasn’t throwing interceptions like he had grown accustomed to over the second half of the 2024 season but he did throw seven incompletions in 17 pass attempts.
Worse yet, Georgia’s defense couldn’t keep Georgia Tech off the field. The Yellowjackets had 19:48 of possession in the first 30 minutes. Things could’ve been worse with the field position Tech would find itself in frequently, but the traditionally fearsome Dawgs defense looked non-threatening against Haynes King (12/16 passing, 207 all-purpose yards, two touchdowns) and Jamal Haynes (eight rushes, 79 yards).
