Joe Joyce is done: Fight Disciples break down Zhilei Zhang’s win in rematch, McCaskill vs. Ryan controversy
At one point the next contender for heavyweight gold, Joe Joyce is now on the outside looking in. The giant got decimated by Zhilei Zhang for the second fight in a row. Last time, his eye got swollen shut. In the second fight in the U.K., Joyce got put to sleep.
Now that “Big Bang” Zhang proved himself a contender, what’s next for the interim WBO heavyweight champion? He may be next in line for Oleksandr Usyk, while others want him to face WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. If we must wait for either, Fight Disciples would like to see Zhang vs. Deontay Wilder or Anthony Joshua.
On the other side of the pond, one of the worst scorecards in boxing potentially robbed Sandy Ryan of a crowning moment against Jessica McCaskill. Fighting to become the unified welterweight champion, Ryan seemed to have edged McCaskill by landing crisp counter shots.
The rugged McCaskill managed to take Ryan’s blows. However, the judges couldn’t come together to determine a winner, as scorecards read 97-93 for McCaskill (Mark Streisand), 96-94 for Ryan (Michael Ross) and 95-95 (Barry Lindenman).
A rematch is expected, but the judges should get questioned, as that was dangerous for boxing’s progress, per Fight Disciples. Hosts Adam Catterall and Nick Peet dive into the latest controversy in the sport and (speaking of) Conor Benn fighting in Florida on the same card after failing multiple drug tests. Was it the right move to have him fight?
