Proposed Red Sox trade sends Gold Glove to Pirates for rookie starting pitcher
The Boston Red Sox are looking for some frontline pitching to upgrade their starting rotation, and this proposed trade will do that and benefit the Sox for the future. What’s proposed is sending the Sox’s Gold Glove rookie Wilyer Abreu and prospect Wilkelman Gonzalez to the Pittsburgh Pirates for rookie starting pitcher Jared Jones.
Abreu has been considered the top trade asset the Sox have, so he will probably be the first to go. He provides power hitting, as he led rookies in extra base hits, and a Gold Glove in right field. If the Pirates want to try and build a contender, Abreu would be a solid pickup.
Gonzalez is the Sox’s #14 draft prospect, and is shaping up to be pretty good. While he had a 4.73 ERA in AA last season, he was 4-3 in 24 games, struck out 92 hitters, and average against him is .198.
In return, the Sox get Jones. Now, Jones is a rookie, but his upside is huge. This past season, he had a 4.14 ERA, but he struck out 132 batters in 22 games. His K/9 is also pretty good, sitting at 9.8.
This could be a good trade for the Sox, but since they are trying to win now, getting someone with a lot of “upside”, doesn’t really make sense. However, if they test the trade market for proven starters and it doesn’t work out, this could be a good alternative.
Scenario: Abreu + W Gonzalez ➡️ Pittsburgh for Jared Jones
Burnes/Fried (~$28m)

J Jones ($800k)

Kutter and/or GiolitoThat’s a really solid rotation.
Add some weapons to the pen, grab a RHH (or two), backup catcher, all while staying under the tax? I’m in. https://t.co/MZpeqv0Vjf
