The Professional Fighters League (PFL) is set to return to New York for its final two semifinal events. Officials have confirmed that the matchups for both cards have been finalized, according to ESPN. The main event of the August 18 card will feature a heavyweight semifinal between Renan Ferreira and Maurice Greene. The event will take place at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
Renan Ferreira, known for his knockout prowess, is coming off an impressive 50-second knockout victory over Matheus Scheffel in the regular-season competition on June 16. The 33-year-old Brazilian fighter has an impressive track record in the PFL, with only one loss in his eight fights within the organization.
Maurice Greene, a training partner of Jon Jones and a UFC veteran, had a mixed performance in the regular season, going 1-1. The 37-year-old New York native will have the opportunity to showcase his skills in front of a hometown crowd.
Lightweight Semifinal: Shane Burgos vs. Clay Collard
Headlining the August 23 card will be a lightweight semifinal bout between Shane Burgos and Clay Collard. Burgos, a 32-year-old fighter from New York, secured his spot in the playoffs when the PFL suspended Natan Schulte and Raush Manfio for failing to fulfill contractual obligations in a lackluster regular-season bout. Burgos is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Yamato Nishikawa on June 23.
Clay Collard, a 30-year-old fighter with boxing experience, had an impressive regular season, going 2-0, including a second-round TKO of Stevie Ray on June 23. Collard has a record of 23 wins, 10 losses, and 1 no contest. He has proven himself to be a formidable opponent in the PFL, with a 5-2 record in the organization.
The PFL has also announced the schedule for other playoff matchups. The men’s featherweight and light heavyweight playoffs are set to take place on August 4 in San Antonio. The winners of the semifinal matchups in each division will advance to fight for the PFL’s $1 million divisional championships later this year.
Exciting Amateur Bout: Biaggio Ali Walsh
The August 23 main card will kick off with an amateur bout featuring Biaggio Ali Walsh, the grandson of the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. This promising young fighter will have the opportunity to showcase his skills in front of a passionate crowd at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
The PFL’s return to New York promises thrilling matchups and intense competition as fighters vie for their chance to compete for the coveted $1 million divisional championships. Fans can expect to witness exhilarating moments as these skilled athletes battle it out in the octagon.
