The Rangers and Astros fought until the final game of the regular season to determine which team won the AL West and earned the second seed in the American League playoffs. It’s only fitting that their battle will play out in the final days before the World Series.
Their regular-season battles went mostly in favor of Houston, with the Astros winning nine of the 13 contests, including a sweep of the Rangers in Arlington in September.
This postseason matchup has all the potential to be a high-scoring series. The Rangers had the fourth-highest wRC+ (114) in baseball during the regular season, while the Astros ranked fifth (112). Texas tied with Minnesota with 233 home runs, the most in the AL, while the Astros were fifth in the AL with 222.

Hoping to slow down the opposition’s offenses, the Astros will turn to Justin Verlander, while the Rangers will hand the ball to Jordan Montgomery. Verlander was outstanding in his lone playoff start against the Twins, delivering six shutout innings and allowing only seven baserunners (four hits and three walks) to reach while striking out six.
Montgomery, acquired at the trade deadline from the Cardinals, pitched seven shutout innings with just six hits allowed against the Rays, but struggled a bit more against the Orioles, allowing five runs (four earned) off nine hits and a walk over four innings of work.
