What channel is the Heritage Classic on? Time, TV schedule for Oilers vs. Flames 2023 Canadian outdoor game

The NHL is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Heritage Classic today by bringing the Battle of Alberta outdoors.

The Oilers and Flames face off in the 2023 edition of the Heritage Classic. The event is coming full circle, returning to Commonwealth Stadium this season, the site of the inaugural Heritage Classic in 2003.

It’s the first time that the two Alberta foes are facing off against one another in an outdoor game. While both organizations have played on an outside rink, there has yet to be an outdoor Battle of Alberta contest.

The start of the 2023-24 season has not gone well for either club. The Oilers and the Flames find themselves only in front of the Sharks in the Pacific Division, each owning a sub-.500 record. Both teams will be without star players as well, as Edmonton captain Connor McDavid is expected to miss the game with an upper-body injury, and Calgary defenseman Rasmus Andersson won’t be available as he is serving a four-game suspension.

Commonwealth Stadium is the site of the 2023 Heritage Classic between the Oilers and the Flames. The venue is home to the Edmonton Elks, one of the football teams in the CFL.

This is the second time that a Heritage Classic will be played at the facility. The first-ever Heritage Classic in 2003 was also played at Commonwealth Stadium, so the NHL is going back to where the event began for the 20th anniversary.

Heritage Classic history

This year’s game marks the seventh Heritage Classic in league history. The Canadian outdoor event is not held annually like the Winter Classic is in the United States.

All seven Canadian teams have taken part in the event at least once. The Sabres are the only United States-based club to partake in a Winter Classic, playing against the Maple Leafs at the 2022 game.

This marks the first time that the Flames and Oilers are playing one another in the event. This marks the third Heritage Classic for both organizations. Both Edmonton and Calgary have won one Heritage Classic and lost another.
