EA Sports dropped the first trailer for the video game on Wednesday, Aug. 16.

NHL 24 new features

Exhaust Engine

One of the newest features in NHL 24 gameplay is the “Exhaust Engine,”  a new and improved part of the game that rewards offensive possession.

Offensive teams can build up a “sustained pressure meter,” which is done through puck possession, hits and shots in the opposition’s zone. When the meter fills up, offensive teams will get an “adrenaline effect,” which increases passing speed and accuracy for up to 30 seconds. Defensive teams will have to deal with the “pinned effect,” which impacts skating. It can be countered by clearing the puck for five continuous seconds.

Goalies and their stamina will be affected by this as well, either positively or negatively. Actions that cause the goalie to tire are shots on goal, time in the zone and passes across the crease. Actions that will help the goalie recover are clearing the puck out of the zone, play stoppages and timeouts.

Presentation changes

There also will be changes to the presentation of the games while playing.

There have been more than 75 different goal celebrations added to the game, allowing users plenty of options to properly celebrate after scoring.

Users can now add and customize player banners along the boards for specific rinks. There will also be additional camera angles available, as well as different light effects for in-between whistles. Crowds will have an enriched atmosphere that will be directly effective by results of the game, with new reactions from the crowds.

New analyst voice

There is a change to the voice that you will hear commentating games in NHL 24.

Cheryl Pounder, a former member of Team Canada and current TSN analyst, is replacing Ray Ferraro as the color commentator in the game. Her voice will be alongside play-by-play announcer James Cybulski, who replaced Mike “Doc” Emrick in NHL 20.

Ferraro had been a staple in the EA Sports NHL franchise since 2015 when he was first introduced as an ice-level reporter. He was bumped up to color commentary the same year that Cybulski took over for Emrick.

NHL 24 cover

This year’s NHL 24 cover features Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar.

Makar is the third member of the Avs to grace the cover of an EA Sports NHL game, putting Colorado in a tie with the Blackhawks and Flyers for the most player appearances from one team.
